Abstract

Blood donation contributes to improving public health. The demand for blood is increasing day by day, while the supply does not meet the needs. A good knowledge can be a motivation to donate blood regularly. Adolescents have good physiological conditions and meet the donor selection criteria easily, besides having an altruistic motive. The purpose of this study is to explore adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes about blood donation. This quantitative research was conducted using observation and exploration techniques with a cross-sectional approach. The research respondents are adolescents from Tegal Malohan Village, Klaten, Central Java. Data were converted using the Guttman scale and the Likert scale, and then categorized using Sturges’ formula. The data were analyzed univariately, bivariately, and descriptively. The characteristics of adolescents who dominate are male (62.5%), aged 19 years old (25%), have never donated blood (92.5%), and are students (40%) or college students (40%). The level of knowledge about blood donation tends to be low (62.5%), and the level of attitude towards blood donation is in the moderate category (57.5%). There is no relationship between the level of knowledge about blood donation and the level of attitude towards blood donation. There are many factors that can influence knowledge and the formation of attitudes and behaviours, one of which is information. Health promotion plays a role in determining the right strategies for delivering health information to create a community that can enhance health independently.
